The Carbon Management System

"We fight global warming by committing ourselves to reduce our impact and the climate changing gas emissions we release into the atmosphere."

Global warming and climate change are two of the subjects that have been discussed most widely during international meetings in recent years. Finmeccanica is involved in reducing the causes of these phenomena, working on various fronts, both at management and infrastructure level. This commitment was demonstrated, in 2009, by updating of the Group’s Environmental Policy with the aim of helping to combat climate changing gas emissions by reducing their impact.

Implementation, in 2009, of the Carbon Management System, the model for analysis, management, accounting and periodic re-examination of the Group’s Carbon footprint, helped to identify approximately 120 initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which will be implemented during the three-year period 2010-2012 and thanks to which it will be possible to achieve the important CO2 reduction target set in 2009 for the Group: 15 – 20% less within 2015.

Governance of the Carbon Management System in terms of direction, co-ordination and control has been entrusted to Finmeccanica Group Real Estate (FGRE); the operating companies have the task of identifying actions to reduce emissions and drawing up and implementing improvement plans; Sites have the technical and operative task of putting emission reduction measures into practice.  Definition of the corporate organisation that will support the various initiatives within the companies has taken concrete form, with introduction of the figure of the Carbon Manager, which to date has been nominated by the majority of Group Companies.

The Carbon Management System and consequent implementation of the improvements will thus generate a series of noticeable environmental benefits, relating in particular to the reduction of CO2 emissions, which will also have a positive effect on the economic side by reducing negative external factors both for the company and for the community as a whole.

To find out  more about how Finmeccanica measures and intends to reduce its CO2 emissions, we suggest you read the chapter “Finmeccanica Group's commitment to the environment” in the 2010 Sustainability Report.
