Disposable Sensor Networks allow short and long term surveillance of wide areas, without any additional infrastructure, therefore they can be applied when traditional systems cannot be deployed.

So far, several applications have been identified, which include: operational field support and critical area control (see and forget), long term monitoring and observation of environmental parameters, security of critical infrastructure (airports, financial districts, utility companies, defence establishments), border surveillance, battlefield surveillance, short-term surveillance of newly established bridgehead or battalion compound until more stable infrastructures are in place (“initial 72 hours protection”).

The architecture of an DSN consists of a set of unattended ground sensor nodes, able to generate an ad hoc wireless communication network, and of a control centre to collect information from the sensor nodes network.
